Best tires for santamo?

  • Hi,

I have from 124000km till now 168000km the goodyear Vector 5+ at 185/70R14.

Now on the new aluminium coupe 98 wheels i must put 185/60 R15 , or 195/60 R15 tires.

The Vector 5+ was fantastic tires on all matters.

After so many km, the grip is still there, but i have a lot of noise.

I am impressed cause older goodyear tires were very bad.

What tire do you suggest for me now ?

something that you have tested to your santamo.

  • usually michelin tyres perform well at milage and wear. this is my choice if possible.

the 195th are somewhat bigger at diameter, so u will drive a little longer gearing. therefor i would choose them for summertyres.

  • at the moment i use michelin alpin 185/70 r14 afair.

for the summer i think ENERGY SAVER 195/70 R14 91T GRNX will be my choice.

  • Hi Folks,
as i bought my santamo in 2001 it was still equipped with the hyundai-genuine summer-tires "Hankook Radial-866" in dimension 185/70R14-88-H. So the santa-genuine Tires were SpeedIndex H (210 kmh), not only T (190 kmh) wich is listed in the cars-documents.

The listed facts in the documents are 195/70R14-91-T and 185/70R14-88-T, both on rims 5,5-Jx14 (or JJ - is the same) with ET46mm (= rim-offset 46mm). :teach:

they are ment as technical required minimum. Higher speed- and/or weight-indexes are OK (in BRD-FRG) as long as the dimensions 185/70R14 or 195/70R14 are fulfilled, both on rims 5,5-Jx14 ET46.

I didn´t like the genuine-light-alloy-rims (alu-wheels), thats why i sold them years ago, and i mounted new continental eco-contact-3 185/70R14-88-T on new better-looking rims. I decided myself for the 185 cause they were cheaper as 195. this centimeter more or less causes nothing but extra-costs at all.

And i decided for speedindex T cause it was cheaper as the genuine-equipped speedindex H. But this saving money (just a few ridiculous Euros at Least...) on the speedindex was a mistake i believe....

and since than i regret this decision for speedindex T ! ! !

these contis will still be in use this summer 2011, so they seem to be real long-distance-runners, but right from the beginning i had the impression that the hankook with speedindex H were running more exactly and these hankook H´s felt harder at 2,3 bar as the contis T´s at 2,3 bar do.

and since then i am afraid to run the santamo long-time on maximum speed which is 205 kmh on my tacho (speed-indicator), because the tires T are "only" up to 190 kmh.

OK the Tacho is not exactly, and the T tires can hold-on a few more speed as exactly only 190, but i have a kind of bad feeling with that....

    My suggestion is:
Prefer tires with Speedindex H (210kmh) in dimension 185/70R14 on rims 5,5-Jx14 ET46. This will be the most senseful compromise between costs, security and feeling....... If you prefer all-season-tires stay at Goodyear. The Brand of pure Sumer- or Winter-Tires should be not of real interest, they´re all good at least
    - as long you don´t buy China-Sh.. :D

  • I am very impressed by goodyear vector 5+. If i find them with a fresh DOT number, like middle of 2010, then i will take them.
    But they are old design.
Also, as you know , unfortunately, greek culture, become a bad culture.

In greece the tire-shop are removing the rubber stamp of DOT on these wheels.

Cause i had 1 tire failure, ordered the same brand and type, and the tyre had the DOT erased by scratching that area.

Believe it, i have 3 tires with DOT, and 1 without.

Also, i heard about 205 km at tacho, which is very-very accurate, 5-7km faster than GPS readings.

I once pressed it at 180 km/h with auto, and i got a bit scared, it gave me the feeling that it hurts.

So, you found the 139 ps i have lost?

  • Hi savvaske,

you prefer vector 5+ wihich is a very good tire (goodyears became better since they use silica-mixture), but it´s an all-season-tire (sumer AND winter). in tests here in FRG it´s in the middle-section of summer and winter tires test results, the best all-season allrounder. that´s why it´s very expensive ! do you really need expensive tires with "winter-symbol M+S snowflake"?

A little cheaper than all-season-goodyear´s will be pure summer-tires like Continental Eco-Contact-3. It is available in speedindex T (190kmh) and H (210 kmh) - prefer the 185/70R14-88-H. continental-reifen.de or conti-online.com "choose language - greece"

A cheaper alternative summer-tire is the Hankook Optimo K715. available in 185/70R14-88-T (190kmh). it is the cheapest "very good" tire in actual summer-tire-tests in FRG. (take a look on adac.de).

If you find back your 139 PS you should prefer the hankook Optimo K415 in 185/70R14-88-H (210kmh). hankooktire-eu.com
hankook are good and little cheaper. (est.1941 in Korea, today one of the world´s top tires, the only serious "eastern" tire i think)

Your fotos are really helpful, but do you still DRIVE your santamo ? - it seems always to be de-mounted.... ;)

  • I will search kumho dealers around here, and get prices.

Also, this car never repaired more than 1 day, then closed, and driven, mostly by my wife.

It's our family tool, we like it.

I will go to the sites you told me and have a look.

If i wouldn't fix my car, you would never had photos?

I also drive and fixing a BMW E34 520i (my old father loved it) but i am tired by these cars.

There is always something to fix on these BMW, never been relaxed.

    And 1 question,

i have found 4 tires, stock, 2010 dot, premiumcontact 2, but at 205-60-R15 ..... should i install them?

No problem with TUV in greece, you can pass an elephant for a motorcycle.

  • TÜV in Greece - Elefant - Motobike - Santamo - aha - OK ! :)
We love the santa Fat-Mo too, at least a long-lasting long-distance-runner.... and some problems got every car today, my neighbours with german and french cars got their problems too....
kumho tires test-results in Tests are always in middle to lower midfield position, hankook are always a little better.....
BUT even VW equipped the former Polo-Model with Kumho tires... - SCANDAL or not ?! - no further comment!
in the actual summertires test in adac.de (biggest automobile club in germany, with insurances, rescue-service eu-wide with helicopter and an rescue-airplane too, and so on - their tests are state-of-the-art here in FRG - take a look there - their site is in german, but you should get used to that...) every year in march they test summer tires, and every september they test winter tires, in all tests they also test actual all-season-tires to compare them with pure summer and pure winter tires, really very informative!
they got kumho´s in the actual test too.... result "good" - the hankooks are one of the "very good". but at least in the latest tests the most tires are verygood to good.

the actual "bad" and "very bad" summer-tire-results are only tires like SAVA, POINT-S, CHENGSHAN, KLEBER (ooops this seemed to be a top-brand...but no), DEBICA, and DAYTON. avoid them all !

all others are ok for usage on santamo, which is really not an extreme-sports-car.... so it doesn´t really matter if you buy "good" or "verygood" tires as long they fulfill the allowed dimensions:
Continental ContiPremium Contact 2 (actual testwinner 2011, but sorry not available in allowed dimensions for santamo... thats why i recommend Conti EcoContact3 for santamo, this is an available and affordable conti-tire for santamo 185/70-14 and it was testwinner 2-3 years ago!) - Uniroyal RainExpert (but it never rains in California, äähhh Greece, so you don´t really need rain-specialized-tires?!) - Michelin Energy Saver - Hankook Optimo K715 - Semperit Comfort-Life 2 - Apollo Amazer 3G Maxx - Pirelli Cinturato P1 - Firestone Multihawk - Kumho Solus KH17 - Barum Brillantis 2 - Fulda EcoControl - Goodyear Dura Grip - Dunlop SP StreetRespons - Vredestein Sportrac 3V - Bridgestone Ecopia EP 150 - Nokian V - Maloya Lugano - Dunlop SP Sport Fastresponse - Semperit Speed-Life - Firestone TZ300 - Hankook KinERGY Eco K425 - Goodyear EfficientGrip - Falken ZIEX ZE912
these all are the actual good and verygood summer-tires 2011. they may not all be available in 185/70-14, i didn´t check the availabilities right now....

If you should mount 205/60´s i can´t tell.... in FRG santamo has just one rim-size allowed 5,5-Jx14 (or JJ - is the same) with ET46mm = rim-offset 46mm. You may mount on these rims just 195/70R14-91-T and 185/70R14-88-T or 185/70R14-88-H.
OK you may get special permission for bigger wheels+rims in FRG, but here in FRG this means extra-costs for changing cars-documents…..so why do that ?…
    If you want/need bigger wheels - buy a SUV or a Tank…..

if you mount 205ers you need a bigger and broader rim ? - this may touch inner side of santamo when steering extremely ? - so it´s not just a question of "TÜV in Greece" but more a question of your security?....

i don´t know about that, but i just find expensive 205ers are not necessary.... when you can get the above "good" 185ers cheaper....

at least don´t get me wrong..... i really like your fotos ! :anbet:
    and let´s :prost:

  • I like your answer.

In greece noone is going to check your car for tires.

Also i got 1998 hyundai coupe aluminium wheels, which are very wide to take these tires i asked.

The price of these stock tires is just 100 euros, so it makes me think of
    it as making a test.

  • 100,- euro per 1 tire or 100,- for all 4 tires ?
100,- euro per 1 tire seems an ok-price for 205ers for original new premiumcontact-2. (=400,- for 4 tires).
100,- euro for all 4 tires premiumcontact-2 (=25,- € for 1 tire) could be a fake or used tires.... attention in this case - security first you know !

ok, as i parked my santamo today after work, i parked with steering turned completely to the left. and i watched and felt inside the wheel-covers - just for you! (car-wing, mudguard, mud-wing in english?). i got 185ers and inside there is still space of many centimeters. so the 205ers ("only" 2 centimeters more at least) should fit on the santa?!
    - when Greece-TÜV is expecting an elefant 8)
Have fun with the premiumcontact-2 ! its verygood on dry road, in rain its steering exactly, and the braking-distance should be one of the shortest. its told to be some fuel-economic too. so it seems to really rock da santa :bang:
can you please show a foto of the 1998 hyundai coupe aluminium wheels ?
Sorry, I dont speak Greece-language, but:
    " µ¹Â ųµ¯±½ " or " ÃÄ·½ ųµ¹¬ ¼±Â! " - this hyundaiboard doesnt accept greek-letters, sorry, i just want to write: Cheers! - Sante! - Cheerio! :sauf:

  • i am saying 100 euros 4 tires, GENUINE stock continental.

    Not any fake.

Believe me, sometimes you can find items so cheap.

Here is the wheels i bought

The road in greece is like soap. When it rains you really can't even stand still.

Also the tires are getting like soap soon, as they contact with soap pavement.

So, if you pay new expensive tires, in 1,5 year the grip would be awful,

and the color of the tires is getting from black to grey-white.

Check me here to soap road, with a GPz750 with only measured 65 ps.

check also city madness at athens, a real friend video.

you can check the road condition and the brakes unable to stop.

  • city madness in Athen..... i wonder if this is real.... there are no surrounding-sounds like the other cars motors, no signal-horns as this mad-max-bike overtakes them..... no head-wind-noises (airstream)..... the sound in the tunnel doesn´t change..... but very very amusing to watch - in the last third of this take he overtakes even a police-motorcycle on a red-light - have i seen that right ? ! ! ! :bang:

the wheels and tires look good - have fun !

i must visit greece with my santamo - Mo and me would have lots of fun doing some hand-brake-drifts...... :cheesy:

am out of order tonight - watch KlitschKO boxing :boxen:

  • the video is true. He is a tester of bike magazine MOTO in greece.
This was his trip from home to magazines offices.

Also the bike cops , are very mystirious. Many times they see you without
helmet, free exhaust, no licence plate, and they never stop you.

But the might stop you for turn signal not working.

  • Got another tire-idea for you as i thought about changing my wintertires for the summertires as the first springtime-sun comes out here this weekend.....

if the streets in greece are really soooo slippy, then its no wonder that the goodyear vector5+ was satisfiyng you !!! - its simply logic, because its an all-season-tire (the best summer+winter combined tire), thats why its so good on the soapy-streets in greece.... good grip on dusty-slippery like ice+snow..... and because its also a winter AND a summertire its good on slippy roads AND it can bear the sun and high summer-temperatures in greece....
could have come to that conclusion some sooner, sorry ! :schläge:
i really love these smileys..... come on one more time :schläge:
